Big News from CRIB QUILT

We are happy to announce that Masako's new book, which features lots of different motifs in applique and embroidery, and her new fabric collection "American Country 16" will be released at the end of April!

Both will be available at our booth (Booth 21) at Spring Market 2016 (a retail show), which is being held in Tokyo Dome Prism Hall from April 26th to April 29th. Some of her work in the book will be on display and she would be happy to autograph your copy!

Masako's book will be available at her publisher's booth at the 40th Japan Hobby Show 2016, which is being held in Tokyo Big Site East Hall from April 28th to April 30th. She will be giving a workshop at their booth on April 28th.

Thrilled to share photos from the exhibition in Osaka 5

Have you ever heard of an “Air Photographer”?

A friend of Ms. Sara Hanamura is one of two air photographers in Japan. His name is Teruyoshi Tago.

He flies a paraglider powered by a motor and takes photos and videos.

He shares short version videos of this three DVDs, for promotion, on youtube. Please enjoy.

He gave a presentaion each day during the exhibition.

With the motor, he can keep flying for two and one half hours. Putting a video camera on his lap, a photo camera in his right hand, he operates the paraglider with his left hand.

The paraglider has a number of strings handing down from the wing. The wing is very light like, about 5kg.

According to him, the view from the sky looks like a “Patchwork” of local living.

His machine comes apart completely so that he ca take it abroad for a shoot.

He has been to many places in Japan as well as to Madagascar, the United States, Europe and China.

He points out that what our life makes more impressive is to have a way to change the view toward things surrounding us. I think it’s true.

Thrilled to share photos from the exhibition in Osaka 4

More than 100 quilts made by our students were exhibited in Osaka. Here are a few of them which especially caught my attention.

I would like to begin with this quilt.

It was breathtakingly beautiful and many people stopped to enjoy its lovely handwork.

Do you remember that two quilts made by our students were displayed at the Tokyo Dome Show last January? The student who made this quilt made one of those as well.

Fine quilting lines cast shadows.

What a lovely flower quilt made with hexagons!

“Love the life you live and Live the life you love.” It’s so true.

What I like about this quilt is the combination of color.

The quilter is the first one to use Masako’s new fabric collections for a quilt.

Embroidery in the patterns and on the top really works well in the quilt.

Another excellent quilt with hand embroidery.

Thrilled to share photos from the exhibition in Osaka 3

Our “Garden Party” quilt exhibition was literally full of beautiful flowers!

It would be nice to sit down for a cup of tea and enjoy the wonderful quilts.

It's our version of a quilt picnic!

The ceiling of the venue was so high that the tall tree could sit in this large space very comfortably.

Thrilled to share photos from the exhibition in Osaka 2

We set the theme, "Garden Party", a year and a half earlier at the exhibitions.
We had our students make class projects especially to be shown at the exhibitions.
They are these mushrooms and house shaped sewing boxes!

We chose the fabrics and the patterns for the students, but the embellishments were their own designs!

Thrilled to share photos from the exhibition in Osaka 1

I meant to write a story about the first exhibition in Tokyo which was held from the 14th to 19th of May. But many photos of exhibited quilts are duplicated, so I chose to write about the one in Osaka in detail.

As I mentioned, the main theme of the exhibitions was “Garden Party”. We asked the very well known flower arrangement artist, Sara Hanamura, to have fresh flowers decorate the quilt exhibition.

At the entrance to the exhibition, there was a signboard filled with beautiful flowers. The exhibition was held on the 9^th floor of Hankyu department store.

You are now entering our quilt garden party.

The white birch house welcomes you!

The house was made by a friend of Masako’s who is a carpenter living in the country.

He carefully selected suitable blanches to form this house. Some were twisted and some were large. So I can imagine it was hard to pick the right ones, especially the folk shaped ones, for poles.

It is based on an idea of a garden tool shed. The quilts which surround the house are some of Masako's quilts symbolizing "Garden" and "Forest" that go well and reflect the theme.

Workshop information for our two exhibitions

Our annual exhibition in Tokyo will be held from the 14th to the 19th of May.
Another exhibition, which is always held every other year in Osaka, will take place from the 28th to the 30th of May.

Exhibiting quilts with fresh flowers is the new twist.
That's why it has a subtitle of "Garden Party".

Our students are making mushrooms using wool and felt, and house shaped boxes of fabric as well as quilts.

For those of you who cannot make it to the shows, I will post photos to share with you later.

There is one more thing the students are making small tapestries.

There are some challenges, or I should say, limits. It's called a"Challenge Quilt" here in Japan.

1. Only the same Moda pre cut fabric set may be used.
2. The tapestry must measure 30x30cm.

Many kinds of quilts, using different patterns, will be exhibited.
There will be no duplicates!

A wide range of workshops will be held each day during the shows.

For the first time, we have invited a woodwork artist to make small houses and a red doll.
It's too dangerous to use an electric saw at the show. So we are having the artist supply the finished wood shapes and participants will paint them.

Mark your calendar!

Did you know Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival committee will hold its first autumn quilt festival in September?

The venue is not Tokyo Dome, but in the building called "Prism Hall" which is right next to the Tokyo Dome.

Number 1 is the Tokyo Dome and Prism Hall is number 7 on the above map.

The space is limited compared to the Tokyo Dome and it will focus more on commercial areas rather than exhibits.

CRIB QUILT will have a booth where we will sell new fabrics and kits for the winter vacation.

It will take place from the 16th to 19th of September, so please save the dates!

TOKYO International Great Quilt Festival 2015 : A program on stenciling

Masako delivered a program on stenciling on the 23rd of January at the quilt show.

To begin with, she spoke about how the stencil was developed and how it affected the way of living in America under financially difficult times and circumstances. Many people could not afford wall paper and furniture in the nineteenth century. This type of stenciling emerged from the desire to decorate the interiors of their homes.

Masako also told about an American lady who is now 101 years old and still living on her own on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
We visited her home to celebrate her 100th birthday with Irene,our American friend, and were inspired by her stenciled walls and furniture and hand stenciled quilts as well.

Masako wanted to combine stenciling with quilting and created some templates to make patchwork pattern designs.
It's currently out of stock, but will be available online soon.
